The Budding Economist competition tests the knowledge of potential economists of the region by putting them through a series of rigorous tests of both written and oral skills pertaining to the subject matter of economics. The competition starts at the respective countries of each participating student, where in he/she writes an essay on a topic provided and submits to the organizers of the annual SAESM. Next during the course of SAESM, the participant undertakes rigorous written examination of knowledge in (a) Economic Theory, (b) Quantitative Economics and (c) Development Issues. At this juncture, an evaluation is done of the essay and written examinations and the top 5 participants on the basis of cumulative scores in the above are called for the final round which comprises – Economic Interpretation of Visual slides and an live open interview with a panel of distinguished economist/scholars from South Asia, where the participants knowledge of the subject matter of economics is tested through an oral examination. The participant with maximum score from all rounds is declared the budding economist of South Asia.
